Big Blue Marble

This is the last photo of Earth from space taken by man. Called 'The Blue Marble' it is the most published photo ever. It was taken by the Apollo 17 crew as they headed home from the Moon, with the sun directly behind them. Somewhere on that small planet is a tiny place called Maryland.

As the Earth's temperature rises, ice and permafrost melt. Scientists were literally amazed when this huge crack just snapped open.

City in the Andes Could Face Severe Water Shortage

El Alto, Bolivia, an indigenous community of 800,000 people, is growing between 5% and 10% a year. The new residents, fleeing the poverty of the highlands, are putting an additional strain on the city's resources. With rapidly diminishing glaciers (high altitude glaciers are melting much faster than their low altitude cousins), the increasing population and a poorly managed water system, the area could soon be suffering a severe water shortage.

Pine Beetle Turning Forest into Carbon Emitter

An infestation of pine beetles is turning 144,000 square miles of woods in British Columbia from a carbon sink to a carbon emitter. The warming climate encourages beetle infestation and the decaying trees emit carbon -- not to mention the loss of trees reduces carbon absorption.

The pine beetle infestation is the worst on record for British Columbia.

Another front?

The Washington Post’s 12 April story, Iran Top Threat To Iraq, U.S. Says, page A01, should obfuscate every American, as history repeats itself. It is now common knowledge the Bush Administration fabricated similar scenarios to justify the unprovoked aggression against Iraq. The WMDs did not exist. Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda were enemies. Al Qaeda is staffed, managed and funded by Saudis. Iraq had no connection with 9/11.

GWAA Regroups

At a meeting earlier this month, the more active members of GWAA laid out plans for the future of the organization.

While John Cleveland's participation in the group will be limited, he will continue as President and will continue sending out Climate Change News, his highlights of news events appearing in other news sources. Margie Cleveland continues as Secretary and Sandra Henry-Stocker as Treasurer.

The group will focus on workshops for citizens interested in learning what they can do (e.g., how to build and use rain barrels) and on options for bringing wind power to Queen Anne's County.
